California secures federal assistance to support response to Park Fire

SACRAMENTO: Governor Gavin Newsom announced today that California last night secured a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help ensure the availability of critical resources to suppress the Butte County fire.

The state is moving quickly to bring in additional funding and resources to help fight the rapidly spreading Park Fire.

Over 3,500 people have had to evacuate as a result of the rapidly spreading Park Fire, which is close to Chico and has burnt more than 45,000 acres.

Visit fire.ca.gov for up-to-date information on road closures, evacuation routes, and centres.

The FMAG will support local, state, and tribal agencies responding to the fire in their application for a 75 percent reimbursement of their qualified fire suppression expenditures.

The FMAG is made available via the President’s Disaster Relief Fund on a cost-share basis. The program offers immediate financial support to communities affected by fires and is run by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES).

California has already obtained FMAGs for the Thompson, French, and Hawarden fires, which have burnt about 5,000 acres this wildfire season.
